My Heritage Black Friday sales and DNA uploads

My Heritage has announced its Black Friday sale – its DNA test is now only £49 UK / £49 US until 23 November 2018 at 11.59pm. And, in the UK at least, they are offering free shipping on 2 or more kits.  This is the lowest price ever, so get your test now, or stock up now!

I love My Heritage, and they have a large European user base since they are based in Israel, therefore if you haven’t tested with anyone yet, I definitely recommend them.

In other important My Heritage news, they are changing their policy as of 1 December. Until then it is completely free to upload raw DNA to them and take advantage of their ethnicity profile, and DNA matches.

After 1 December, unlocking ‘additional’ DNA features will require a payment for all raw DNA files uploaded post 1 December – It’s not entirely clear what this means, but I imagine it means that you will have to pay for both access to contact/look at matches and to get your ethnicity profile.   As far as I am aware they have not yet announced what this pricing will be.  In any case, it will be more expensive than ‘free’, which is the current price, so don’t delay, do it now!

According to My Heritage, “All DNA data that was uploaded to MyHeritage in the past, and all DNA data that is uploaded now and prior to December 1, 2018 will continue to enjoy full access to all DNA features for free. These uploads will be grandfathered in and will remain free.”  Therefore, if you have tested already with Ancestry, FamilyTreeDNA or 23andme, it really is a no-brainer to upload your DNA to My Heritage as well.

If you’re looking to uncover any family mysteries, and you want to take advantage of other sites’ DNA relatives databases, I strongly recommend My Heritage, particularly for European ancestry, because it has a really strong European customer base due to extensive marketing. From what I can tell it’s also REALLY fast growing; they only started their service in late 2016 but the database is already around 2 million. It also has a great chromosome browser if that’s your thing. I’ve just uploaded my mother’s  DNA there, and she has closer matches on My Heritage than Ancestry or any other site (she has entirely British and Irish ancestry so far as I have been able to ascertain).

In case you’re wondering why I am pushing this so hard, I genuinely believe My Heritage is an important place to have your DNA uploaded if you are interested in matching with DNA relatives.  I am not an affiliate (so far as I can work out, they don’t even have a proper affiliate program right now, or it’s a well-guarded secret!).  But they’ve just held a really successful ‘My Heritage LIVE!’ event in Norway which went down extremely well – (I was sad not to be able to attend but unfortunately I had a prior booking that weekend), and they are one of the sponsors of Eurovision this year.  That means they are going to be on many more peoples’ radar, whether they are interested in genealogy or not.  I think 2019 will be a year of massive growth for them.

So, in summary, buy your test NOW, or upload your DNA NOW!  If you aren’t sure how to download your raw DNA, here are some links for information – I’ll also be recording some tutorials on my soon to be launched Youtube channel.
